BRIAN MACKENZIE

I’m Brian Mackenzie and have been unschooling my kids in London, Ontario since the first day mom’s mat leave ended and I said to myself, ‘Sure I can push him around in this stroller on errands, but what am I going to say to him?’.

Working as a video guy, I was able to film inside schools of all grade levels for a Speech and Language organization, I knew if I ever had kids, I wouldn’t be sending them to a school of any kind.

I am now a unicycling parent of 7 and 9yo unicycle riders.

2022 CONFERENCE SESSION

SESSION: Unicycling. The Unschool of Sports.

Imagine posting in an online forum, ‘my kid just learned how to kick a soccer ball. Anyone in [any city anywhere] want to organize all the soccer players you know to meet up with us and also show us around your city?’ Unicycling is a socializing most people haven’t even thought about thinking about. Staying local? Future riding buddies/friends of all ages will ask you about learning. People of all skill levels can ride together. If you can jog you can ride. What about wheelchairs? Watch me push the stroller and imagine the fun bonding experiences of a family member push ride!

SESSION: HOMESCHOOLING IN FIVE WORDS

As soon as I became a stay at home dad who was planning on homeschooling I thought, "Why wait until they are 'school age'?" If our version of education is going to be as fun as I think it is...wouldn't they want that fun already? Recommended for anyone concerned they might not be able to teach at home; I show you how easy it can really be.

SESSION: UNPRESCHOOL. WHY WAIT?

I'm a dad of a three and five year old who has been unschooling for four years. I discuss the benefits of starting 'unschool-thinking' as early as possible; incorporating fun, high energy videos from a variety of our many exciting 'edventures'. Topics include screen time, fitness, socializing, risks & pushing limits, STEAM, experiments, play, and the many ways you are able to combine any or all of them.

Trick scooters, skateparks, tricycles, a unicycle stroller, a slackline, tools, cooking, equipment, dinosaur toys, lego, hills, forests, swamps, computers, whiteboards, cameras, and even an indoor obstacle course...This is unPreschool. It's fun.
