Kathleen Cotter Clayton is the daughter of Dr. Joan A. Cotter, author and developer of the RightStart™ Mathematics program. Kathleen is involved with curriculum development and has written or co-authored 16 manuals. Kathleen and her husband Steve have six adult children and six delightful grandchildren. She travels, designs and makes mathematical quilts, teaches online middle-school classes, and speaks across the US and Canada, sharing the mission to help children understand, apply, and enjoy mathematics.

SESSION: MATH CARD GAMES

This presentation will show you fabulous and effective alternatives to worksheets and flashcards by playing easy and fun math card games. SESSION: TEACH MATH TO A CHILD WITH LEARNING CHALLENGES
Teaching is not for the faint of heart. Mix in a child with learning challenges and you may end up becoming very discouraged, and possibly, ready to throw in the towel. Be encouraged, you are NOT alone. Whether your child has been diagnosed with a learning challenge or simply doesn’t “get” math, come to this workshop to learn some teaching strategies and techniques. Help your child overcome those learning challenges and succeed in math.
SESSION: MATH MYTHS, MATH ANXIETY, & LEARNING DISABILITIES
Is your child facing learning challenges? Does your child have math anxiety? And what myths are we talking about?? Children with learning challenges must truly understand in order to remember. The traditional approach of teaching mathematics does not work for them. In this workshop, you will learn some teaching strategies and techniques that will help children with learning challenges, reduce math anxiety, and debunk the myths that make your task harder than it needs to be.
SESSION: YOU CAN BE A CONFIDENT MATH TEACHER
Maybe you struggled with math, so how do you choose a curriculum to avoid the same fate for your child? Maybe you are really good in math but are unsure how to teach it now? What DOES it take to be a confident teacher for your child? Find out the science and the art of teaching math. It is a science because much research has been done on how children learn, especially in math. It is an art because each child is different and lessons need to be tweaked. Come learn and be encouraged to become a confident math teacher.
SESSION: MOM, DON'T MAKE ME THINK - JUST TELL ME THE ANSWER
As a teacher, it’s so easy to give the answer, isn’t it? Oh, that’s right... you don’t do that. How long do you allow a child to think before you start helping them? Sometimes we need to be quiet and let them wrestle with the problem to discover the answer. Do you know that children will learn better and remember things longer when they discover the solution? The goal is to provide a way for them to learn how to solve problems. How might you go about doing this? Find out how to help your child think their way through math.
