His expertise is in turning reluctant writers into competent communicators. Bryan is the video producer of over twenty online writing courses, and Vid-E-books that provide a uniquely Canadian perspective to teaching writing, having been personally mentored by Dr. J.B. Webster, the original author of the “Blended Structure and Style” method of teaching writing.

2021 CONFERENCE SESSION

SESSION: ZERO TO WRITING IN 20 MINUTES *KIDS*

This brief session takes the reluctant writer from “Zero to Writing in 20 Minutes” by eliminating the number one barrier to starting to write; “What to write about?” By working with a source document, Bryan teaches outlining and note-taking techniques that pick out the key words of each sentence in a given paragraph, and then reconstructing the paragraph just using those key words, first orally, then in writing. This modeling exercise gives students “what to write” so we can introduce the skills of “How to Write.” All in 20 minutes.

TEACHING WRITING IS HARD...MARKING IS HARDER

Writing teachers over the last 40 years have become obsessed with “what” students are writing about, rather than teaching them “How to write.” In addition, the educational system has a heavy bias towards favouring girls, while neglecting boys. The messages sent out to boys is that “writing is a game they cannot win.” By teaching concepts one at a time, and building checklists for marking, boys turn from reluctant writers to enthusiastic ones, because they discover that writing is a game that they can win, once shown the goals and targeted skills they will master. This session equips parents by working with checklists that make their writing instruction and marking more objective, and so much easier.

SESSION: HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY IN 7 EASY STEPS

This seminar teaches the Seven Steps of the A+DVANCE essay writing formula as described in the book “How to Write Excellent Essays in 7 Easy Steps.” Each letter in the acronym A+DVANCE is an easy way to remember the key points in this presentation from “Understanding the Assignment and your Audience” to “Final Editing Tips.” Perhaps the greatest surprise is “where the money is” in the essay and how quickly markers determine the grade for the paper. This seminar is especially relevant to high school students (and their parents) as they prepare for those critical college level essays and diploma exams. The A+DVANCE Formula is the extended introduction to the book, and lays the foundation for various types of persuasive, argumentative, narrative, and expository essays.
